Police make arrest for theft on traffic stop

JONESBORO, Ark. – A traffic stop for speeding became an arrest for theft by receiving on Monday in Jonesboro.

At 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Jonesboro Police Officer Francisco Matos noticed a white Dodge Charger speeding westbound on Windover, the incident report states. He turned on his emergency lights and stopped the vehicle.

GetPhoto (13).jpgOnce stopped, Matos spoke with the driver – Candena Bonita Speaks, 37, of Paragould. She could only provide a license, having no registration or insurance. The officer soon learned her license was also suspended. He ran the license plate through his terminal and noticed it was expired on 12/2016. The tags, however, had a sticker tab claiming expiration on 5/17. But a more pressing detail alerted the officer to misbehavior.

The license tab was reported as stolen from Payless Auto Sales.

Matos radioed for backup. He then returned to the suspect vehicle and asked Speaks to step out of the car. Speaks claimed the vehicle was her boyfriend’s, Grayson Dodson, according to the report. She did not have an excuse for driving with a suspended license that the report included, although the passenger told the officer she had a ride on the way because she knew the driver’s license was suspended already.

Speaks was taken into custody for speeding, no proof of insurance, driving while suspended, fictitious tags, expired tags, and theft by receiving. She was taken to Craighead County Detention Center. She will be in court Feb. 22 at 1 p.m.

The Payless Auto Sales manager was contacted and advised of the stolen sticker tab being located.
