Report: Machete-wielding drunk attacks roommate

JONESBORO, Ark. – Making roommates with someone you barely know can be a terrible idea.

One man learned this lesson Sunday, Nov. 13 – although it must have felt more like Friday the 13th when he was staring down the blade of a machete in the hands of a man attacking him.

It happened at an apartment complex at 342 North Allis Street. A 24-year-old man, the victim, said he met 28-year-old Chavez Mendez while working for a roofing company and Mendez had moved in with him only four days prior.

According to the victim, Mendez came home drunk and said he was insulted that the victim did not respect him. The victim said he tried to explain that he did but Mendez elbowed him in the face. However Mendez, 5’2″, did not severely hurt the victim with the maneuver.

When the victim began to beg for Mendez to stop, the report says the suspect instead grabbed a machete, started to scream at him and chased him out of the back of the house with the machete raised in the air.

A witness confirmed to police she saw this.

Mendez was arrested for aggravated assault and taken to Craighead County Detention Center.

The machete was logged into evidence.
