Mentally challenged man leads police on chase with bad ending

JONESBORO, Ark. – A man who was reported missing was later discovered in a nearby county, chased by authorities and wrecked a vehicle in a crash which sent him to The Med in Memphis.

The initial report began after 6:30 a.m. Thursday morning, as Jonesboro Police Department were told of an 18-year-old who was mentally challenged and had left the residence the night before, around 10 p.m., never to return. A relative of the man said he was angry because she wanted him to go live with their mother in Mexico. She also said he has mental problems.

Shortly after 8 p.m. the man was located in Poinsett County, according to their sheriff’s department. A deputy contacted JPD and informed officers that the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Department had been in a chase with the man, who had stolen a vehicle at the Poinsett Package Store near the county line on Highway 1.

The deputies pursued the man in the stolen vehicle all the way to Wynne, where he wrecked the vehicle, the report says. He was airlifted to The Med in Memphis by Hospital Wing.
