White River Health, UnitedHealthcare Split Sends Hospitals Out of Network for Some Patients

BATESVILLE, Ark. — White River Health said its hospitals and facilities became out of network April 1 for patients with certain UnitedHealthcare plans, a change the health system said could leave some patients facing higher out-of-pocket costs for hospital and facility-based care.

According to information released by White River Health, the change affects patients with UnitedHealthcare commercial plans and Medicare Advantage plans. White River Health said physician and professional services, including routine office visits and exams, remain in network at this time.

White River Health said patients with Arkansas state retiree or teacher coverage through UnitedHealthcare are not affected. Patients receiving care through Veterans Affairs coverage also are not impacted, according to the health system.

The health system said it remains in negotiations with UnitedHealthcare but contends that major issues remain unresolved. White River Health said it is seeking an agreement that would reduce denials, improve patient access and better support the sustainability of its operations. The health system said UnitedHealthcare’s proposals “consistently fell short” of what it believes is needed to preserve care quality and access.

Patients can still receive care at White River Health, but hospital and facility services may now be billed as out of network, depending on their plan. That could result in higher out-of-pocket costs or reduced coverage for some services, according to the release.

White River Health encouraged affected patients to contact UnitedHealthcare to review their out-of-network benefits and coverage details. The health system also said some patients who are pregnant, undergoing treatment or managing chronic conditions may qualify for Continuity of Care, which could allow temporary in-network access if approved by UnitedHealthcare. Requests must be submitted by April 30, according to White River Health.

The health system said patients with employer-sponsored coverage also may wish to speak with their human resources departments about their options. White River Health further urged patients to contact UnitedHealthcare directly if they want to express support for continued in-network access to White River Health services.

White River Health said emergency care will still be covered at in-network rates. Patients with questions can contact the system’s patient support team at 870-262-3777 or visit the White River Health website for updates.
