KNOBEL, Ark. — A 91-year-old man has died after being hospitalized for injuries sustained in an alleged domestic abuse incident, and authorities are now working to upgrade charges against the suspect to murder.
According to a release from Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole, 91-year-old Joe E. Dodd, of Knobel, died March 20, 2026. He had been hospitalized since March 15 following injuries authorities say were inflicted during an incident at his home.
The Shelby County Coroner notified the Clay County Coroner’s Office of Dodd’s death. The Clay County Coroner is expected to take possession of the body and transport it to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for further examination.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department said it is now conferring with the Prosecutor’s Office to amend the charge against the suspect from first-degree domestic battery to first-degree murder.
The suspect, identified as Joe Ray Dodd, 71, remains incarcerated at the Clay County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.
Authorities previously reported deputies responded at approximately 8:41 p.m. March 15 to a domestic incident at a residence along Highway 90 in Knobel. Upon arrival, deputies were met by the complainant, identified as the grandson of the alleged victim.
Deputies were directed to a bathroom, where Joe E. Dodd was found lying near a shower. According to authorities, the suspect was attempting to clean blood from the victim at the time.
Deputies removed the suspect from the bathroom and assisted medical personnel. While receiving care, the victim told deputies and medical staff that his son had assaulted him, according to the sheriff’s office.
The suspect was taken into custody at the scene and initially booked on a charge of first-degree domestic battery. District Judge Curtis Hitt set bond at $500,000.
Investigators reported finding multiple items with blood on them inside the residence, including an oxygen tank, which were collected as evidence.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies had responded to the residence in recent months regarding possible abuse and had also accompanied Adult Protective Services on prior visits. During those earlier contacts, the victim denied any abuse was occurring.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials await results from the state crime lab and consider formal charge enhancements.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
