Man Sentenced to Ten Years for Fatal DWI Crash, Deportation Expected

Jonesboro, Arkansas. A man who caused a fatal drunk-driving crash has been sentenced to ten (10) years in the Arkansas Department of Correction after pleading guilty to Negligent Homicide, a Class B Felony, and Driving While Intoxicated.

At the request of the State, the Court imposed an upward departure from the Arkansas Sentencing Commission guidelines, meaning the defendant received more prison time than the guidelines typically recommend.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Jessica Thomason prosecuted the case and stated:

“Because of the seriousness of this crime, our office sought and obtained a sentence above what the Arkansas Sentencing Commission guidelines recommend. While no sentence can undo the harm caused, this outcome ensures the defendant will serve significant prison time and, once that sentence is complete, he will be deported and unable to return to our community to commit further crimes.”

An innocent driver was killed in the February 27, 2025 crash in the 2100 block of East Matthews in Jonesboro when Arturo Chacon crossed into oncoming traffic and struck two vehicles.

Responding officers with the Jonesboro Police Department observed signs of intoxication, including the odor of alcohol and an open container in the vehicle. Chacon was taken into custody and transported to St. Bernards Medical Center where investigators obtained a search warrant for a blood draw as part of the investigation.

Investigators also determined that Chacon did not possess a valid driver’s license and only had a Mexican identification card. An ICE hold has been placed on Chacon. Upon completion of his prison sentence, he will be transferred directly to federal custody for deportation proceedings and removal from the United States.
