JONESBORO, Ark. — A traffic stop in the Cedar Heights area Tuesday ended with a Jonesboro suspect jailed after police say he fled and was later found with more than 16 grams of suspected crack cocaine.
According to a probable cause affidavit, officers with the Jonesboro Police Department were in the area of Cedar Heights on Feb. 10 when they observed a vehicle swerve across the center line and activate a right turn signal. Police reported the driver then accelerated and ran a stop sign at Cedar Heights and State Street.
Officers conducted a traffic stop and identified the driver as 32-year-old Martin Jamar Stafford of Jonesboro. While officers were running his information through dispatch, a K9 unit was deployed and alerted on the vehicle.
Police reported locating a digital scale underneath the vehicle and suspected oxycodone in the driver-side rear floorboard. Officers also found 16.4 grams of suspected crack cocaine in Stafford’s waistband, according to the affidavit.
Authorities said Stafford attempted to pull away from officers during the arrest and was stunned with a Taser before complying.
Stafford was transported to the Craighead County Detention Center.
He is charged with possession of methamphetamine or cocaine greater than 10 grams with purpose to deliver, a Class A felony; possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, Class D felonies; resisting arrest; fleeing; and running a stop sign.
Judge Tommy Fowler set bail at $100,000 cash or surety. His next court date is March 20.
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
