VIDEO: Stolen Vehicle Pursuit Ends in Crash Near Sulphur Rock Elementary School

SULPHUR ROCK, Ark. — A Mississippi man was arrested following a vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash near Sulphur Rock Elementary School after Arkansas State Police located a stolen vehicle reported out of Batesville.

According to an Arkansas State Police report, the incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Dec. 15, 2025, after the Batesville Police Department issued a be on the lookout alert for a vehicle reported stolen from Casey’s gas station. A trooper patrolling along State Highway 69 observed a vehicle matching the description traveling southbound and confirmed the license plate matched the BOLO.

After emergency lights and siren were activated, the vehicle accelerated and began traveling left of center, reaching speeds of 73 mph in a 55 mph zone. The trooper notified Troop B dispatch that a pursuit was underway.

The vehicle attempted to turn onto State Highway 69B but initially missed the roadway before continuing southbound toward Sulphur Rock Elementary School. A tactical vehicle intervention was performed, causing the vehicle to rotate off the right side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a road sign, collided with several trees, struck another sign, and came to rest in a roadside ditch.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Troopers reported the suspect was wearing clothing with retail stickers still attached and had an unopened pack of screwdrivers concealed in his pants. The suspect admitted to stealing the items, according to the report.

Batesville Police Department officers responded to recover the stolen property. Detective Kyle Williford of the Batesville Police Department will investigate the case and file charges.

William M. Slay, 34, of Hernando, Mississippi, was arrested. Pending charges include theft of property greater than $1,000, two counts of theft of property less than $1,000, criminal mischief greater than $1,000, criminal mischief less than $1,000, felony fleeing by vehicle, failure to wear a seatbelt, and failure to maintain liability insurance.
