POCAHONTAS, Ark. – Law enforcement believe that a shooting incident over the weekend in Pocahontas was self-defense – but a man has been arrested on an evidence tampering charge, a media release from Police Chief David Edington said Tuesday.

Authorities responded to a shooting incident at a local apartment complex shortly before midnight on March 31, 2024.

Upon arrival, Pocahontas police discovered that Carl Pierce had been shot and was being transported to a nearby hospital by private vehicle. Pierce’s current condition remains unknown after being transferred to another medical facility for treatment.

Officers detained a suspect at the scene for questioning and initiated interviews with witnesses. Based on preliminary findings, authorities are considering the shooting as an act of self-defense. The individual detained for questioning has since been released.

Meanwhile, Michael Almaraz, 27, of Stockton, CA, has been arrested and charged with tampering with evidence in connection with the incident. Almaraz is currently in custody pending further investigation into the matter.
