Tragic Accident in Poinsett County Claims Lives of Mother and Child

TRUMANN, Ark. – A child was killed and her mother left missing after a tragic automobile accident Tuesday night in Poinsett County.

Sheriff Kevin Molder confirmed the tragic news in a statement.


At approximately 10:30 PM, the Poinsett County Dispatch Center was notified of a one vehicle rollover on Maple Grove Lane and Oscar Road. The vehicle was upside down in the ditch on the West side of Maple Grove Ln.  Deputies of the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office, Firefighters of the Trumann Fire Department, Officers of the Trumann Police Department arrived on the scene at approximately 10:38 PM.

The vehicle was removed from the ditch. No one was located inside the vehicle. Members of the Trumann Fire Department conducted a search of the ditch.

A juvenile victim was located on the bank of the ditch by first responders from the Poinsett County Sheriff’s Office, Trumann Fire Department, and Trumann Police Department.  Life saving measures were immediately started on the juvenile. The five-year-old juvenile later died at NEA Hospital due injuries sustained during the crash.

The mother of the juvenile, twenty-seven-year-old Haley Smith, had not been located at the time of this publication. The body of Haley Smith was recovered in the water by Trumann Fire Department just before 9:00 AM.
