Brookland Police Investigate Allegations of Child Abuse Leading to Felony Arrest

BROOKLAND, Ark. – On November 27, 2023, Brookland Police initiated an investigation into allegations of abuse made by a child.

Brookland Police Department School Resource Officer Connor Baldwin reported that he was contacted by a juvenile female who advised that she had witnessed her father hit and choke her brother Thanksgiving morning. The juvenile female further advised that she attempted to intervene several times on her brother’s behalf during the altercation by grabbing and attempting to hold her father to stop him from assaulting her brother. The juvenile female added that her father also threatened her during this incident.

The juvenile male victim was then interviewed and gave the same account of what had occurred on Thanksgiving morning as his sister did, with little variation. The victim also stated that his father busted his lip during the altercation, and he had sustained an abrasion to his left knee from the incident. The victim added that during the altercation, his father pulled on his arm so hard that he was still experiencing discomfort days later.

On November 28, 2023, Officers with the Brookland Police Department contacted Joseph Wheeler at his place of employment, and he was arrested without incident. Wheeler was transported to the Craighead County Detention Center.

On November 29, 2023, Wheeler was interviewed at the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office and denied all accusations, stating his son initiated the incident by swinging at him first.
