Suspect passes away after attempted suicide in Trumann jail

A person who was booked into the Trumann Police Department’s jail and attempted suicide has died, the department confirmed to NEA Report.

Trumann PD Captain Gary Henry released the following statement:

“On August 1, 2022, an incident occurred in our jail that is under investigation. We can confirm that a subject that was brought in on felony drug charges, booked in, and later attempted to commit suicide in a jail cell. The subject was rendered medical aid and transported to the hospital where they remained on life support until removed on August 7, 2022.  The subject gave no indication at the time of his arrest or booking of their intentions.  Our sympathy is for this subject and the family as they go through this tough time.”

The man who passed away was Benton Jacob Andrew, 24, of Trumann.

The Trumann Police Department is continuing a professional standards review of the incident, Police Chief Jon Redman said in an email Wednesday.
