Grady found guilty of rape

Paragould, Ark. – A Greene County man was convicted of sex crimes against his step-child on Wednesday.

Robert Thompson, Adam Butler, and Wesley Watts—deputy prosecuting attorneys—prosecuted 46-year-old Shanny L. Grady for the rape of his teenage stepchild. After a two-day trial, a Greene County jury Wednesday found Grady guilty of five counts of rape. And Circuit Judge Pamela Honeycutt followed the jury’s recommendation and sentenced Grady to five life terms of imprisonment.

On 10 June 2020, Paragould police learned of potential inappropriate sexual activity involving a minor. The Crimes Against Children Division of the Arkansas State Police interviewed the victim, and the teenager provided graphic details about Grady’s ongoing sexual abuse. Grady and the victim’s mother—Carleena Hawkins—were arrested and charged with various criminal offenses, including rape and permitting abuse of a child. Hawkins pleaded guilty to one count of rape, and the circuit court sentenced her to 35 years’ imprisonment.

Thompson, Butler, and Watts thanked the jury for their service and law enforcement—particularly Lieutenant Rhonda Thomas—for their investigation. Prosecuting Attorney Keith L. Chrestman praised the deputy prosecutors: “This team of prosecutors is stellar. They serve Greene County with passion and professionalism. They are effective. And they have once again made plain that Greene County won’t tolerate the sexual abuse of a child.”
