19-year-old shot and killed after entering wrong home: Fox 13

MARION, Ark. – A 19-year-old was shot and killed by a homeowner in her late 80s in what is being described as a tragic mistake early Sunday morning in Crittenden County.

Fox 13 News in Memphis reports Cody Smith, 19, of Marion, had been drinking at a Halloween party the night before the incident (Saturday night, Oct. 29), as told by witnesses. They told the reporter he “appeared intoxicated” as he left the party early Sunday morning.

At about 3:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Crittenden County authorities were dispatched to a home on Marion Lake Road. A burglar alarm alerted police and the resident of the home, reported to be an elderly woman in her late 80s who lived alone. Authorities arrived to find signs of forced entry, indicating Smith had broken in. The terrified elderly homeowner said she yelled for the intruder to leave but he advanced toward her. She shot him. The Crittenden County Sheriff’s Office told Fox 13 Smith died from the injuries.

An investigation is on-going but no arrests have been made. It is believed the young man entered the wrong home on accident.

The family of Smith has set up a GoFundMe account to pay for funeral expenses. It was a little over halfway to its $8000 goal as of this publication.
