JONESBORO, Ark. – Fines for motorists who violate downtown parking laws will be issued beginning Monday.
A City of Jonesboro parking enforcement officer has written warning citations in recent months, but Police Chief Rick Elliott said full-time enforcement is ready to begin.
“The new parking enforcement officer will begin issuing citations Monday,” Elliott said. “This should help people park closer to the stores where they want to shop, and deter those who would garage their vehicles in public parking spaces.”
The ordinance establishes a two-hour time limit in parking spaces in streets and alleys downtown bounded by Matthews Avenue north to Cate/Burke streets and Union Avenue east to Church Street.
Ten parking lots in the downtown area also will have posted time limits for parking.
Enforcement of this law will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. No citations will be issued on weekends. Violators will be fined $10 for first offense, if paid within 14 days. Afterward, that fine increases to $25. Second and subsequent offenses within a six-month period are $25 if paid within a 60-day period.
Automobiles cited four or more times within a six-month period, or that accumulate fines in excess of $100, are subject to being towed or mechanically disabled.
Those who fail to pay fines will received summons to county district court for adjudication.
