Walnut Ridge council selects replacement alderman

WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Mayor Charles Snapp choked back tears as he began the proceeding to select a replacement alderman for the late Daniel Abbott.

The choices were C. Trent Kirksey and Angie Abbott, the widow of the late alderman. After an executive session meeting, the vote was 6 to 1 in favor of Angie Abbott taking over the role of her widower, becoming the only female on the Walnut Ridge City Council.

Judge Adam Weeks swore Abbott in immediately following the vote. Abbott participated in the remainder of the final meeting of 2016 and will serve the full two-year term her late husband was just elected to the month prior.

Kirksey was gracious in defeat and pledged to continue his participation and efforts in the community.
