Caraway teacher charged with rape

CARAWAY, Ark. – A teacher accused of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old has been charged with rape.

Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington announced Tuesday his office is formally charging Latasha Kay Schoolfield, 31, of Caraway with rape.

“Rape is a Class Y felony with the range of punishment of 10 to 40 years or life,” Ellington said. “However, because the victim is under the age of 14, the minimum sentence is 25 years.”

At the time of her arrest, Schoolfield was employed with a local company that provides substitute teachers area schools.

Evidence indicates her contact with the child was unrelated to her employment.

The probable cause affidavit states the mother of a 13 year old boy reported to Caraway Police Department the 31 year old teacher had been having sex with her son. The boy told officers he and the teacher had sex in Caraway three to four times at his house and once at Motel 6 in Jonesboro.

Text messages on the boy’s cell phone were also found indicating a sexual relationship.

A criminal defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
