Rector Suspect Accused of Attacking Jail Staff After Arrest at Corning Rest Area

CORNING, Ark. — A Rector suspect was arrested Saturday night after deputies responded to a report of a woman trying to start a fight at the tourist information center north of Corning, then later allegedly attacked jail staff at the Clay County Detention Center.

Ashley Brooke Allred, 28, of Rector was booked on charges of public intoxication, impairing the operation of a vital public facility, second-degree battery involving injury to a police or correctional officer, first-degree terroristic threatening, intentional injury to or interference with government property, first-degree criminal mischief involving property valued at $1,000 or less, and disorderly conduct, according to Clay County Sheriff Ronnie Cole.

According to a press release from the sheriff, the Clay County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call at about 9:25 p.m. March 28 regarding a woman trying to start a fight at the Tourist Information Center north of Corning on U.S. 67. The caller told dispatch that a woman had tried to start a fight with her and her boyfriend, the sheriff said.

A deputy responded to the rest area and made contact with Allred, who appeared to be highly intoxicated, according to the sheriff. She was taken into custody and transported to the Clay County Detention Center.

After Allred was placed alone in a cell, jailers noticed she had broken the phone receiver in the cell, according to the sheriff. Jailers went into the cell and tried to calm her down.

A short time later, jailers saw Allred trying to get to the light fixture in the ceiling, the release said. When jailers entered the cell again, she allegedly attacked a jailer and a deputy.

Cole said Allred was taken to the floor, where she was able to kick a female jailer in the head and throat. Staff then retrieved a restraint chair, and Allred was placed in it until she was no longer a threat to herself or jail staff, according to the sheriff.

The jailer who was kicked in the throat and head was taken to Piggott Hospital, where she was checked and released, the release said.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
