SEARCY, Ark. – The White County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about a scam targeting families of recently released or bonded inmates.
According to officials, several individuals have received fraudulent phone calls from scammers posing as detention center employees. The scammers falsely claim that an inmate’s release was a mistake and threaten that the individual must return to jail unless a fee is paid — often through platforms like Cash App — for an ankle monitor.
Authorities stress that this is a scam and urge residents not to send money or provide personal information.
“If you receive a call like this, hang up and independently verify the claim,” the sheriff’s office advised. “Do not trust the caller to provide our correct phone number. A legitimate deputy will never pressure you and won’t object to you verifying their information.”
To report suspicious calls or confirm details, contact the White County Sheriff’s Office directly at 501-279-6279. If you’re outside of White County, contact your local law enforcement agency.
