WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Emergency responders found a dead body Monday afternoon in Walnut Ridge after a relative went to check on the man.
Monday afternoon at 1:03 p.m., the call came in about a relative going to check on Larry Hayes, 72, at his address on the 300-block of Northwest Second Street in Walnut Ridge, according to Police Chief Chris Kirksey. When the woman went to his home, prepared to use her key, she found the screen door unlocked. She opened it but was hit with a “funny smell,” prompting her to call 911.
Walnut Ridge police and fire departments showed up and quickly learned the man was deceased and in advanced stages of decomposition. The coroner was called and assessed the passing to be of natural causes. Afterward, a hazmat team from the fire department retrieved the remains.
Police Chief Chris Kirksey said the coroner indicated the man had been deceased for at least a couple of weeks.
The next of kin was notified.
