MELBOURNE, Ark. – A local law enforcer has passed away, NEA Report has learned.
Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence died Friday, the department informed the public. Lawrence had been battling cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Sherry – two children and several grandchildren.
Chief Deputy Earnie Blackley told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette he has been filling in for Lawrence while the sheriff was on leave. Blackley will serve as acting sheriff until the Izard County Quorum Court appoints Lawrence’s replacement.
“He was a really good guy,” Blackley said to reporters. “Probably one of the better sheriffs in the state, if you ask me.”
Many remembered the sheriff fondly on social media.

I’ve known Tate for many years and was honored to call him a coworker and friend! He will be missed,” wrote Sue Hazelrigg.
He was a fine man and a good Sheriff and friend,” wrote Buck Fountain.
He sent me care packages when I was deployed, great man,” wrote ID Brown.
Visitation will be at noon, Tuesday, April 11, at Melbourne First Baptist Church. Funeral Services will begin at 2 p.m. that day, also at Melbourne First Baptist Church. Burial with military honors will be at Melbourne Cemetery, according to the Association of Arkansas Counties.
