JONESBORO, Ark. – A man’s bad driving got him arrested on serious drug charges, a report says.
At about 12:48 a.m. early Monday, Jonesboro police noticed a white 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass/Ciera cross the left center line on Access Road while turning on Middlefield, and then again on Middlefield. Officer Aasin Lester conducted a traffic stop on Apache Drive, just east of Red Wolf Boulevard.
Lester made contact with the driver, Johnny Ankum, 50, of Jonesboro, and told him why he stopped him. Ankum could only provide his identification card but a check showed he did not have a valid driver’s license. Ankum reportedly told the officer he had been taking a friend back to the vehicle he was driving. He seemed nervous, the officer said, and after being detained, could not provide the name of his “friend.”
During a consensual search of Ankum, the officer found a clear plastic baggie containing a crack rock in the front pocket of his black hoodie. A clear baggie containing a white powder known to the officer as cocaine was found in his right watch pocket, the report said.
Ankum was arrested and charged with felony possession of schedule 1 or 2 substance, less than 2 grams, no driver’s license and no proof of insurance. Ankum was given a court date of April 20, 2017.
He was released from jail on Monday evening.
