Illegal dumping cluttering Craighead

CRAIGHEAD COUNTY, Ark. – County authorities are dealing with illegal dumping as the summer heat reaches its peak.

While traveling east on Craighead 456 Monday morning, Keith Bowers with the Craighead County Sheriff’s Department noticed five large garbage bags full of yard waste near the intersection of Craighead 403. It wasn’t just leaves and grass left at the scene, though. A mini-fridge’s parts were left at the scene.

Bowers searched for evidence tying the trash back to a suspect but could not locate anything of significance. However, he did clean up the scene and dispose of the garbage.

It would not be the only garbage Bowers dealt with Monday.

At about 1 p.m., he reported being made aware of an illegally discarded couch/recliner at the intersection of Clinton School Road and Sundown Lane. The old brown recliner was thrown in the ditch on the west side of Clinton School Road. Once again, Bowers loaded up the discarded item and transported it to Legacy Landfill for disposal.

While illegal dumping is a misdemeanor crime, the figurative crime is how suspects do not seem to realize they could dump their garbage, for free, at locations in Craighead County. Legacy Landfill allows for free dumping for most needs in the county, except for construction materials. A list of information about what can be deposited at Legacy can be found here.

  1. Unless the fees have be changed at Legacy Landfill in the past 4 years…..Residents of the city of Jonesboro can dump free unless it is construction material..Residents that live in Craighead Cty paid a fee to dump anything.

What do you think?
